Legislation Updates
PORAC Legislation Overview - PORAC reviews thousands of bills every year to determine which issues are priorities for our rank-and-file public safety members. Their advocacy team then meets with legislators and stakeholders to create solid public policy that creates an environment where officers can utilize resources to best protect our communities. Because if our families aren’t safe, nothing else matters. DSA BOARD OPPOSES HOST OF MEASURES ON 2016 GENERAL ELECTION BALLOT - The DSA Board and PAC Committee has elected to oppose these measures on the upcoming ballot.Governor’s Parole Inititiave Stalled Headed towards Appeal - The California District Attorneys Association successfully stalled the proposed Public Safety and Rehabilitation Act of 2016 after a Sacramento County Superior Court judge ruled in the group’s favor, prohibiting Attorney General Kamala Harris from moving forward in issuing the newest prison realignment initiative’s title and summary to be circulated for signatures for the 2016 election. The decision has been appealed. Anti-Pension Bills Delayed - Both measures introduced by former San Diego Councilman Carl DeMaio and former San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed are being held at this time. The pair cited fundraising issues and the large opposition by labor in California as reasoning. But they do intend to reintroduce at least one of the measures for inclusion on the 2018 ballot. Death Penalty Reform Approved for SIgnature Collection - Two measures are vying for a place on the November 2016 ballot. The DSA has thrown its support behind the first,Death Penalty Reform and Savings Act of 2016, which attempts to seal loopholes, limit appeals, and make the process better for suspects, inmates, prosecutors, and law enforcement.
